Gabriella Papa
Gabriella creates abstract impressions of places and people, focusing on energy and feeling rather than the literal objects before her. By simplifying forms or allowing them to blur into one another, she seeks to capture the essence of a moment—its movement, atmosphere, and emotion.
Living on the edge of the Peak District, she draws inspiration from vast, ever-changing landscapes, dramatic weather, and the sense of peace that comes from being immersed in nature. She is fascinated by the idea that creativity and connection with the natural world can slow us down, draw us out of our minds and into our bodies, and help regulate the nervous system. In an age dominated by digital life, she believes art is more essential than ever: a means of reconnecting with ourselves, the world around us, and the simple joy of looking, making, and feeling.
Her work often evokes a sense of calm, fresh air, joy, and play, creating space to be still, slow, silly, and ultimately joyful. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she produces both original artworks—from landscapes to looser abstractions—as well as bespoke commissions tailored to interior spaces. She collaborates with individuals and interior designers to create pieces that respond to specific briefs and environments.
She studied Fine Art at Lancaster University and went on to complete a Master’s degree. Having painted for over 25 years, she now devotes much of her practice to creating work that captures the ephemeral, the joyful, and the restorative moments of life.
